FAQ
Liberica Coffee Information
What is Barako Coffee?
Barako coffee (or *Kapeng Barako*) is a specific varietal of the Coffea liberica species traditionally grown in the Philippines (especially Batangas and Cavite). The name *Barako* means "stud" or "wild boar," referring to the coffee's bold, strong flavor, and pungent, distinctive aroma, which often includes notes of aniseed, floral, and smoky wood.
What is Liberica Bean?
*Coffea liberica* is one of the four main commercially cultivated coffee species. Liberica beans are notably large and asymmetrical. They offer a unique flavor profile often described as bold, smoky, woody, and slightly fruity, with a unique aroma sometimes reminiscent of jackfruit.
Why is it called Rare Coffee?
Liberica is considered rare because it accounts for **less than 2%** of the world's commercial coffee production. It is difficult to grow efficiently and is primarily consumed in the regions where it is grown (Southeast Asia), making true Liberica beans difficult to source internationally.
What is the best way to brew Barako coffee?
Due to its naturally bold flavor profile, Barako coffee performs excellently in brewing methods that allow for full extraction, such as **French Press** or **pour-over** (V60). We recommend a coarse grind for immersion methods to avoid over-extraction and bitterness.
Is Liberica coffee high in caffeine?
Liberica's caffeine content is unique. It is generally lower than Robusta and often falls within the range of Arabica, or slightly lower. The Liberica experience focuses more on its complex flavor and aroma rather than an intense caffeine kick.
What is the typical roast level of your coffee?
Our Barako coffee is sourced and roasted to a **medium-dark or dark profile** to complement its naturally high body and enhance the signature bold, woody, and smoky characteristics the bean is famous for.
How should I store my coffee to keep it fresh?
To maintain maximum freshness, store your coffee beans in an airtight container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid refrigeration or freezing if the bag is open.
